I need help creating a "modern" victorian Master bedroom feel...?

I just redid my entire master bedroom and something is not right... My husband and I bought a gorgeous burgandy comforter with matchng curtains, all of which have big gold flowers on them with olive/ sage green leaves. Our furniture is a deep walnut color and I just painted the walls to match the leaves. My husband LOVES it... me not so much... it needs something. It looks like a room in a little old lady's victorian home, pretty... just too grandmaish for me. I feel like something could jazz it up a bit and make it feel a little more modern, but not sure what. I prefer the less is more concept, I can't stand clutter or business. Throw in the fact that I am very practical and this room is small and has a king size bed, but we're not changing it or the comforter set. The hardware is gold and two pictures that we have up and for sentimental reason will not come down are both framed in antique gold... I know... it doesn't help matters. So far one wall is bare. Any ideas?

My first though was to change the hardware on the dressers to a black wrought iron to give it a more modern feel. Since you have gold in the bedding and curtains, the sentimental prints should still match fine. You might consider putting a full length mirror framed in black or wrought iron on your bare wall. This will tie in the new hardware as well as make the room appear larger with the large mirror.

Try to modernize you lighting a little. Think transitional pieces rather than traditional or victorian. For inspiration:

Reply:try painting all the features black and cream (fireplaces, ceiling roses ect). try floor length curtains and paint the wall a light cream, ie Camauge by dulux.
Reply:Look for candle sconces of some kind for the bare wall -- and put a large mirror in between them, get a gild frame that will match or coordinate with the picture frames and the hardware. Personally, I don' like the gold, I use a dark aged metal in my room (which is similar) but since you've started with the gold, continue. You might consider buying wrought iron candle holders (walmart, cheap) for the sconces and for your nightstand or dresser -- if you like that look, you might get a book on faux finishing or antinguing and consider antiquing the gold frames to cut down the shine -- from there, consider replacing the hardware. I love the bedspread you've described, I've considered something VERY similar for my room but have a clashing wallpaper that has to be dealt with first!
