I want to decorate my little boy's room?

I would like to do so with a relatively small budget. He is 3 years old.

For my daughters room we bought light blue paint (it was oops paint, so it was cheap) and painted the walls blue. I am in the process of painting blades of grass around the room. I will paint flowers growing around the room too. THere are some giant wire and nylon butterflies hanging from the ceiling. (It is cute.)

I would like to think of something like this for my boy, but I cant paint very well. Does anyone have suggestions- or better yet photos?

He loves Cars, but I worry it will be out of "style" in a year. It is also expensive to buy too many accessories.

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

Reply:The easiest way to decorate a bedroom is to start with the bedding first ... that way you know which direction to go with color. If the comforter has a pattern, you can use one of the colors in it for the walls, and one or two of the others as accents around the room.

As far as decorating themes ... well, if you choose bedding with a theme, there ya go! Little boys love cars for years, so you probably won't have to redo it anytime soon. Other themes could be sports, outdoors, animals, geometric shapes, etc. What kinds of things does your son love?

If you go with the car-theme, you can probably find bedding pretty easily. And for the walls, do you know about "Wallies"? They have self-adhesive decorations for walls, even murals (and yes, they have cars ... I checked for you!). Here's the website:

Have a look ... maybe something there will give you some inspiration! Good for you for wanting to do something fun like that for your kids! Have a great time with your decorating project!
Reply:I painted stripes on the back of my son's wall because I too worried that the decorations would go out of favor quickly.

I think that cars will last for some time though. So, you should be safe there. A forest theme would be awfully cute though!

As far as pictures, go to the library and look at children's book that have simple-easy-to-copy illustrations and take yours from there. I have even copied the fire engine design from Robeez shoes for my son as I have to draw them everyday. (www.robeez.com)

For a car theme, you can paint the outline of a town (just paint it flat like a western town front). Add some cars in front of some stores and on another wall you can have some hills with roads. Add some trucks and stuff there.

For a forest theme, you can paint one wall the forest. You can add some wood fairies, turtles, toadstools and the like.

I did a mural using acrylic paints. It was cheap and turned out great. I hope I gave you some ideas!
Reply:Boys are generally into cars for quite awhile. I know Wal-Mart was carrying a "generic" car themed bedding set. It was really cute and priced lower than the movie version. There were also other accessories.

When we did our child's room, we used coloring book pages. I borrowed an overhead projector to blow them up on the wall. Then I traced over the lines with pencil and painted with acrylic paints (they are the small containers in the craft section of department stores--they go far and are inexpensive). I did a light spray of flat acrylic sealer when it was done.

We also did the ceiling blue with clouds and press-on, glow-in-the-dark stars and planets. Some 3-D wood cutouts from the craft store were added around the room for more detail. (Being careful of the size so there wouldn't be any choking hazard.)

The room was a hit and turned out great. It was also fun to do.

Whatever you decide, your son will love it because you did it for him!

Have fun!

Reply:If he loves Cars, try painting a "road" on the wall around the room with magnetic paint so that you can put car magnets on it.
