I want to "build" a 4 foot square garden. I need to use wood planks for the "walls" around my garden. Since I am planting vegies, not flowers, I can't use green treated wood. Can I use pressure treated wood planks? Or are they treated with harmfull chemicals, too? Thanks
Please no stupid answers.
A question for gardeners......?
Yes, the pressure treated wood also has chemicals. The best planks to use are redwood/cedar. They are more expensive, but last longer and look nicer.
I revise my answer, this site says pressure treated is ok:

Reply:Pressure treated is regarded as safe for a vegie garden. They don't last as long as the green but will still be good for many years. The bulky railway ties or sleepers we used to use for easy garden beds were treated with creosote, also a no-no, but were so popular most timber yards now stock safely treated pine versions of them. These are heavy enough to need almost no nailing or screwing.
Reply:Some pressure treated wood is safe for gardening, some is bad. You'll have to ask the people at the lumber yard.
Personally I would just use regular untreated wood. You could give it a coat of linseed oil to help seal it, help it last longer. Or line the edges with some plastic. I don't think it matters much. The wood will last a while. By the time it is gone the soil will be settled and be a nice mound without sides. And the roots will be deeper.
Happy gardening.
Reply:Use cedar for it's natural insect repellent properties. I'm kicking my self for not keeping the article, but there was a lady that came through my town that has a method similar to yours that uses cedar for that reason. It was called "square foot gardening" or something like that.
Reply:DON'T USE ANY TYPE OF PRESSURE TREATED THEY ARE TREATED WITH FORMALDEHYDE,,,SAME CHEMICAL THEY EMBALM PEOPLE WITH,,,,ARE YOU SURE BOUT THE SIZE? 4 SQ. FT IS ONLY A 2 ' X 2 ' AREA,,, LIKE WHAT WAS SAID BEFORE CINDER BLOCKS IS GOOD TO USE FOR THIS SMALL A PLACE,,,,PLANT SOME HERBS OR SMALL FLOWERS IN THE HOLES TO ATTRACT BEES AND SUCH
Reply:Instead of using lumber, you may want to try cinder blocks placed end to end. You can plant herbs or other small plants in the holes and the cement won't rot like the wood will.
Reply:wood is wood is wood. just build the garden, use a good compost %26amp; soil mix, mulch well, weed, and reap the fruits of your labor.
Reply:Its been so long since I had 2 garden beds... i honestly can't remember. I think no. Home depot/lumber places will be very helpful showing you what's best.
