Budget wedding reception decoration help?

Hi!!

My friend is doing a wedding reception for his sister and her husband. He asked me for help about decorating the place. I gave him a few ideas but we still would like more ideas though.

So far, we decided on food, music, and making our own centerpieces for the tables (round). But the hall is dark with no windows (it's in a church) and we want to decorate it like lighting, tulle, balloons, and maybe flowers (but prob not b/c of budget). We were wondering if anyone of u guys have some ideas abt how to decorate the room though since the color of wall is just this: http://www.tri-valley.k12.il.us/sjones/p...

We can't go beyond the limit of like $1000 and would like to cut down expenses whenever we can. And plz keep in mind, that we are the only ones doing the decoration not some wedding planners, etc.

So guys, do you have any ideas about how to decorate this? Any other ideas/tips would help too ^_^

PS: we were thinking abt having red and either white/tan color for tables

What a great friend you are!

Here are a few of my favorites.

You can do amazing things with tissue paper!

I don't know if you have an Old Time Pottery near you but I was able to get 100 sheet bundles there for about $1.

I made these floating "pom-poms" in about 3 min. each! They are so easy and look amazing.

I was practicing for my wedding and I taped pin light flash light around the fishing line facing down into the tissue "ball", it gives it an amazing paper lantern effect. (check the dollar store!)

*Money saving tip - you can't see the wire so any cheap lite weight wire will work no need to get the more expensive cloth wrapped floral wire.

I didn't try the luminaries yet but I bet they look just as great.

More fun with paper!

With Christmas lights on sale right now you can make these paper lanterns for a great price and no one will know you didn't go all out.

I agree that non-floral center pieces are usually more affordable. However check Publix if you have those in your area. We were able to order my cousin 10 dozen yellow roses for $70!!! Ask to speak to the floral manager.

I probably shouldn't admit this but for my sisters wedding we bought potted trees and flowers from Home Depot and returned them after the reception. We would never have been able to afford the look other wise. (My mom did end up keeping a few of them)

Lacy Luminaries - These would be beautiful as center pieces or as decoration around the room. Maybe even to line the walk way into the reception hall.

Lighting! Dimming the lights in the room while adding a plethora of candles will minimize the difficult walls. I bought a bag of 150 tea lite candles for $3.99 at hobby lobby.

Call your local party rental stores. If you are able to rent can lights like these and place them in flower pots or behind plants etc. and face them up the walls with what they call gels (colored lenses) you can transform the room!

I don't think you can ever go wrong with simple candles and rose petals for center pieces. Timeless, beautiful and inexpensive. ( if at all possible avoid the fake petals for this, they tend to look cheap).

I also like blueberry's or other fruits with a floating candle.

I hope this helps!!!! Best of luck!
Reply:What about using candles on the tables for ur lighting...Wal-Mart has those huge round candles in every color for $4-$5. Put one in the center and 3 or 4 smaller candles on the sides of each as ur centerpiece decor. Then use balloon bouquets in other areas (with ur colors, of course) for decor. The candles will provide a sweet, simple, romantic atmosphere. Maybe even purchase artificial stem roses to bend around each "big" candle in the center. Instead of votives, which look cheap 2 me, place the candles that are on the sides of the "big" candle in wine glasses. When choosing ur colors, consider the season in which the wedding will take place...u dont want pastels with snow on the ground! Good Luck!
Reply:I have seen alot of weddings and this is one area where ppl make the most mistakes - decorating on a budget as things tend to look 'cheap' if not done right.

Remember sometimes less is more. There is no better and romantic decoration for a wedding then candles....but in high quantity and EVERYwhere.

For the Centrepieces I would rather see 1 amazing flower then a bunch of cheaper everyday flowers.

Tulle is nice for the draping of the head table but again don't over do it.

Have a white table cloth with a red overlay on the table and then you can place white tealights around your centrepieces.

Please do NOT use christmas lights even if they are white - everyone knows they are christmas lights and tends to look tackyish.

You can try renting some candleabra's - cheap and beautiful.
Reply:We used clear Xmas lights at our reception (should be on clearance now, too, so you can get them cheap). Use votive candles in clear vases or fishbowls on the tables. You can get cheap vases at the thrift store and if they're all clear they don't all have to match (shape). Put 2 or 3 on each table and it will look very pretty. We got flowers at the farmer's market (cheap). White table cloths look very classy and can be rented from party supply stores.
Reply:I've been to several weddings recently that used fruit with just a few flower blooms as the center pieces. One really cool one used red apples and smooth gray river rocks on white table cloths. My cousin did bowls of citrus fruit with a few white flowers tucked in for all the center pieces. You could continue the theme by having fruit flavored candy as the favors.
Reply:I wish i knew what month their getting married, because you could go and pick your own flowers.. Plastic table clothes look nice and are cheap.. I think wrapping clear lights in tulle and hanging them around the outside walls add a nice glow..At my wedding we got balloons to match the color of the wedding, Instead of filling with helium we blew them up and bunched them together in groups and hung them over the tables to look like chandlers and if you want to add light to them use glo stick in the balloons.. To decorate the tables and not spent alot of money set the table with clored paper plates, plastic ware%26amp; cups and napking it fills the tables and looks good even if your doing a buffet style meal..If you can pick fresh flowers and put into diffrent things like glasses, cheap vases, or skip the flowers and use candy in the middle of the table.. Go to http://www.orientaltrading.com they have all sourts of things for the wedding and they are cheap.. Good Luck with your decorating
Reply:rudy is right! now is the time to pick up the small little twinkle type christmas lights and string them about the hall! tablecloths will look much nicer if they are white. [add your colours with accessories] instead of renting tablecloths you can go to costco or that type store and buy beautiful good quality paper tablecloths that look awesome and at the end of the night you roll them up and toss them out! you should also look at their dinner napkins - lovely quality, good looking and very reasonably priced and check out their plastic cutlery - they have some now that look like silver flatware and are very nice!

balloons always look pretty in the wedding colours and are pretty reasonably priced!

round tables? perfect, you can do one centerpiece per table instead of two or three like you'd have to if the tables were long rectangular ones. put a single bud vase with a couple of carnations in it, and tea-lights surrounding the vase. the dollar stores, thrift shops or ikea or walmart are good places to look for inexpensive vases and tea-lights! cheap! easy! pretty!

purchase frresh white carnations very inexpensively. you can tint them to your choice of colours, for example if the bridal party colours are pink and blue, you would put a single drop of red food colouring in the water and that would overnight give you pink flowers. do the same with a single drop of blue food colouring in water to give you blue flowers. do one drop of colouring and if it isn't a dark enough coloured flower then add another drop of colouring until you get the colour you want! green?.....simply add a drop of green food colouring. of course if the wedding colours are red and white, you can simply purchase beautiful red carnations along with the white ones!

you can have a lot of fun decorating the hall. paper streamers are really cheap and go a long way towards prettying a place up!

have fun with it all~good luck~happy wedding!
Reply:hit up an arts and crafts store! they have tons of budget projects for things just like this. My friend wanted to do goody bags for her wedding, but because of the budget didn't know what to do. They ended up buying tiny chinese takeout boxes, decorating them, and filling them with little candies and keychains. There are a lot of websites out there with plenty of ideas. Good luck!
Reply:This time of year, christmas lights are on sale. You can get a bunch and string them around a number of trees and place them around the room. You can often get inexpensive fake trees on sale at Michael's or Joann Fabrics. Also, If the wedding is soon, there are lots of Christmas type trees and plants on sale pretty much everywhere.

Personally, I am not a fan of balloons, I think they are better for kids b-day parties and hospital rooms.
